Painting in Pastel Class Overview
I believe that design and composition is at the helm of all great paintings. Which this said, we will spend the morning delving into basic composition designs, the design matrix, mark making with soft pastels, as well a simplifying your shapes. Our next step will be experimenting with mini paintings (smaller than 6×9). Before we start painting in earnest after lunch, we’ll work on black and white sketches of the picture you want to paint. You’ll be using the photos you bring to the table so that you’re happy with the subject matter. Once your gameplan has been approved, it’s on to painting! My goal is to have you walk about with 1-2 nice mini paintings as well as one successful 9×12 painting. How many paintings you net will depend upon how quickly you paint! An hour before the class ends we’ll do a critique of everyone’s works. I think this is the most exciting part of the day as we can see the results of what each student has learned!
Rebecca Booth Artist Statement/Artist Bio
My work explores the joy that can be found in color, in nature, on animals and in life. I believe we are bombarded with too much negativity that’s why my work tends to be “pretty.” I want people to surround themselves with messages and art that uplifts versus pulls one down. I have been painting in pastels for over 30 years and in acrylic for the past 5. I am influenced by the loose brush strokes of modern-day painter Robert Burridge, the bold use of colors and shapes by Andre Derain, Fauvist, plus the subtleties of the French Impressionists. I am largely self-taught when it comes to fine art, although I have a BGSU BFA in Creative Writing, Graphic Design and Public Relations. I have had the opportunity to study with: Susan Ogilvie, Marla Baggetta, Robert Burridge, Kasey Klan, and Paul Brand. I’m still exploring the medium myself. So, I hope you’ll forgive any missteps.
